If I could wish one thing for you, it would be that you would see yourself as a beautiful human being. Period. There is no other person on this planet that has ever been like you or will ever be like you. You are a gift for this moment. I am grateful that you are here, even if we don’t know each other.
I know life right now is nothin’ but a s*#% show. 2020 is going to go down in the history books and we’re only half way through. I tremble to ask, “what’s next?” You know what, forget I even asked! I don’t think I want to know! Whatever comes next is already on it’s way… It just is what it is.
So what are we supposed to do with all the really tough questions and seemingly impossible mountains to climb? We breathe. We quiet ourselves. We learn to nourish ourselves body, mind, and spirit.
Nourishing doesn’t have to be hard, but it does require intentionality.
I think one of the biggest obstacles standing in our way is the idea that we have to do something BIG to make a difference in our health and well being, when that’s simply not true. It’s the little things that add up and lead to a major change over time. There is no magic bullet, no magic pill, no magic singular exercise. I know we’re all guilty of looking for the one big thing, but it doesn’t exist.
Learning to nourish ourselves isn’t a selfish way of retreating from or ignoring obstacles. It’s a way of building stamina. It’s a way of creating space so that we can objectively observe the hard things, see their truth, and still find a way to move forward.
When we think of the word nourishing of course we think of food, but we can expand our understanding of the word. Nourishing actually means, containing substances necessary for growth, health, and good condition. So what else might nourish us?
- Connection with good friends
- Laughter
- A slow read through a good book
- A walk in nature
- Prayer or quiet meditation
- The sweet smell of a newborn baby’s skin
- The touch of a loved one
- Exercise
- A beautiful sunset
The list could go on and on. All of these things are beautifully nourishing and now, maybe more than ever, we have to intentionally choose them! I know we would like things to be different. It’s not going to happen overnight. And, honestly, I don’t want things to go back the way they were. We’re all in a broken place, but we can reach for the light.
Maybe just start with a small plate of fruit as a snack instead of grabbing the chips. That will be enough for this moment.
You’ve got this. I believe.
